Chapel bridge facts & History:

Chapel Bridge, being one of the best places to visit in Switzerland, has its old age destruction story and the country was not ready for it.

On 18th August 1993, a huge part of Chapel Bridge was caught on fire. The only part that was not affected was a Water Tower and two bridgeheads. It took eight months to rebuild the destroyed parts of the bridge to make it look like the way it used to. On 14th April 1994, the bridge re-opened.

How old is Chapel bridge and what is Chapel Bridge's purpose?

The Chapel Bridge in Lucerne is 650 years old and it was built to cross the river connecting left and right ends. The purpose of building the Chapel Bridge and Spreuer Bridge was to connect an old town to the new. They played a role of town's fortifications.

Lucerne chapel bridge paintings:

Apart from being a significant part of building, the bridge after the name of St Peter's Chapel, the bridge also has hanging paintings which have symbols of triangles which depicts the legends and history of Lucerne, the story of life and death of St Maurice and St Leger. Two-thirds of paintings were destroyed by the fire and only 147 paintings survived.

Significance of Water Tower:

There is a part of the Bridge called Water Tower because it is built on the water. It was used as a prison and it is 30 years older than the Chapel Bridge. This part is not open for the public even though it's a part of the Chapel Bridge in lake Lucerne.
